Frequently Asked Questions
Warehouse racking inspection, as outlined in HSG76, is a critical safety practice in warehouse environments that involves regularly checking storage systems for damage, wear, and compliance with load limits. It ensures that racking structures are stable, securely fixed, and used correctly to prevent collapse or injury. Inspections should be carried out visually by trained staff and periodically by qualified experts, with all findings documented and acted upon. This proactive approach helps employers meet legal obligations, maintain operational safety, and protect both personnel and assets.
Employers are legally required to inspect warehouse racking. This requirement is specified in The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998. To help you understand how to meet this requirement the Health and Safety Executive have provided a guidance document HSG76 “Warehouse and storage: a Guide to health and safety”. This guidance states that employers should ensure their racking systems:
– Are visually inspected weekly or other regulation intervals based on risk assessment (a record should be maintained)
– Are thoroughly inspected by a technically competent person at least every 12 months, with a written report being submitted to the person responsible for racking safety (PRRS) in your organisation
Regular inspections help identify structural damage, improper loading, and wear that could lead to collapse or injury. By maintaining a documented inspection regime and acting promptly on any issues, you protect your employees as well as reduce downtime, avoid costly repairs. Many large organisations for whom you provide services may also require evidence of your health and safety management when completing their own supplier audits.
Whilst we are on your premises we can also complete plant and equipment inspections of other equipment including lift trucks and attachments, pressure systems and LEV systems.
There are different levels of competence, ranging from someone who has received training in what to look for and why, delivered by a competent person, to a highly specialised expert engineer.
Our engineers are highly qualified and experienced engineers who provide racking inspection services.
We also work in collaboration with SEMA approved racking inspectors if you require your inspections to be to an accredited standard. SEMA is the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association and demonstrates a commitment to safety, quality and best practice in the design, manufacturer and installation of storage systems.
Training in Racking Inspection
In collaboration with The Ops Partnership – SEMA accredited inspectors and trainers – we offer tailored racking training at your premises. These in-depth and practical training sessions will give your teams the knowledge and experience to complete internal racking and storage system checks.
We provide accredited and non-accredited expert training packages.
