Keeping Your Pressure Systems Safe and Compliant
At Inspection Services (UK) Ltd, we understand the critical importance of maintaining safe and compliant pressure systems. Whether you’re operating a single autoclave or managing a network of steam boilers across multiple sites, our expert team is here to support your legal obligations and protect your people, property, and productivity.
What Is a Pressure System?
A pressure system is defined under the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000 (PSSR) as any system that contains a relevant fluid under pressure. This includes:
- One or more pressure vessels of rigid construction
- Associated pipework and protective devices
- Steam at any pressure
- Compressed or liquefied gases (including air) above 0.5 bar
- Pressurised hot water above 110°C
Hydraulic systems, while high-pressure, are generally excluded as they do not store energy in the same way. The HSE provide detailed guidance on what they expect of employers who have pressure systems in their workplace, which can be found here
Examples of Pressure Systems
The PSSR applies to a wide range of equipment, including:
- Steam boilers
- Autoclaves
- Air receivers
- Steam calorifiers
- Coffee machines with steam generators
- Pressure vessels in manufacturing or laboratory settings
Why Pressure System Examinations Matter
Failing to comply with PSSR can have serious consequences, which include:
Legal: The PSSR is a statutory regulation. Non-compliance can result in enforcement action, including prohibition notices, fines, or prosecution.
Financial: Equipment failure due to lack of inspection can lead to costly downtime, repairs, or even total asset loss. Insurance claims may be invalidated if inspections are not up to date.
Moral: Pressure systems store significant energy. A failure can cause catastrophic injury or death. Regular inspections demonstrate your commitment to employee and public safety.
Your PSSR Compliance Guide
Type of Equipment | Examination Type | Frequency (Typical) |
Steam Boilers | Written Scheme + Thorough | Every 12 months |
Air Receivers | Written Scheme + Thorough | Every 12–24 months |
Autoclaves | Written Scheme + Thorough | Every 12 months |
Coffee Machines (Steam) | Written Scheme + Thorough | Every 12 months |
Steam Calorifiers | Written Scheme + Thorough | Every 12–24 months |
Note: Frequency is determined by the Written Scheme of Examination (WSE) and may vary depending on usage, environment, and risk factors. Our expert engineers will guide you on the frequency which your pressure system requires statutory examination.
